The book contains the text of the English translation of the unique epical monument of the Buryat people “Abai Geser the Mighty” written down from one of the gifted Buryat story-tellers Manshud Imegenov by a well-known expert of the Buryat folklore Ts. Jamtsarano in 1906. Its published variant (Abai Geser khubun, Moscow, 1995) was consulted. The translation, commentary and articles are completed by Ye. Khundaeva.

The ordinary religious consciousness or religious psychology as the epic evidences was being shaped out without any predetermined frame or rather chaotically at first sight. It was certainly the sensual reflection of the everyday life. In this period, the “infant” period of the evolution of man, of particular importance in his life were the feelings and frames of mind associated with the animistic, totemistic magic ideas which in their turn were related to the formation of shamanism, bon, the various cults, those of the Sun, Fire and the other natural objects.

The animistic ideas as one ofВ the relics ofВ the primitive religious syncretism penetrate the whole ofВ the Mongolian and Buryat folklore and epic. Widely spread were the genealogical myths inВ which the cult ofВ the mountain spirits is depicted. It is just the mountain spirit who appears toВ be inВ fact the father ofВ Geser on the Earth.

According toВ the epic the man possesses not one soul but aВ few ofВ them. One soul is inВ the body, another may leave the body, the third soul may be somewhere else out ofВ the body.
Very often the souls are of some zoomorphic form. There may be the two golden fish coming out of the mangus’ nostrils during his sleep. One might recollect the hero’s chasing of the three stags that had the soul of the mangus.

InВ the Oirat epic the soul may be found inВ aВ copper-headed iron-winged raven that flies out ofВ aВ cut-open breast ofВ the mangus’ mother. The raven turns into aВ fish, aВ marmot. The hero chases it as an eagle, fish or marmot. InВ the demon’s body, both male and female, inВ one ofВ the big toes or inВ one ofВ his ninety five stomachs found not infrequently was an invulnerable baby combining inВ itself the features ofВ the enemy’s unborn offsprings and ofВ some powerful “inner strength” ofВ the enemy.Тут будет реклама 4
Most often the birds and snakes or fish that present the universal cosmic symbols ofВ the upper and the lower worlds come as the embodiments ofВ the soul. AВ soul saving itself from pursuit flies into the sky as bird or plunges into the sea as fish. It might be associated with the dichotomy ofВ the upper and the lower, e.g.
