The book contains the text of the English translation of the unique epical monument of the Buryat people “Abai Geser the Mighty” written down from one of the gifted Buryat story-tellers Manshud Imegenov by a well-known expert of the Buryat folklore Ts. Jamtsarano in 1906. Its published variant (Abai Geser khubun, Moscow, 1995) was consulted. The translation, commentary and articles are completed by Ye. Khundaeva.

The archetype ofВ the celestial forefather is often connected with the solar motive, e.g. aВ golden pole or rays ofВ the Sun coming through the upper opening ofВ the yurt are associated with the conception ofВ the son.

This all proves that the Buryat people were respectful towards nature, natural objects and natural phenomena.
Geser is both aВ shaman and aВ healer. He can control the natural atmospheric phenomena. Geser is one ofВ the sons ofВ Khormusta tengri, residing inВ the Heavens, the highest sphere ofВ the Universe. When there came the time ofВ trouble and misfortune on the Earth he was chosen toВ descend toВ the Middle sphere (the Earth) toВ struggle against the evil and complete his mission ofВ salvation ofВ the people.

He was born on the Earth an ugly child, this is accounted for byВ the necessity for him toВ survive, it was kind ofВ protection against the evil forces, the spirits and the like. When he was aВ child one ofВ his names was Bukhe-Beligte (strong and gifted). Since childhood he was noted for his unusual gifts. When he grows up he turns into aВ mighty warrior. The three cosmic spheres are inВ his power. His origin is inВ the sky, among the divinities, i.e. inВ the Upper World. He lives on the Earth, inВ the Middle world. He travels toВ the Lower world, i.e. the Water kingdom and establishes the ties with its Lord having married his daughter.

In the past the folklore, the rites and the creative arts made a significant contribution to the psycho-emotional state of the members of the communities. One can also draw the conclusion that all the phenomena somewhat “magic” in their essence are closely connected with, affected and inspired by Nature and the way the people treat it.
