The book contains the text of the English translation of the unique epical monument of the Buryat people “Abai Geser the Mighty” written down from one of the gifted Buryat story-tellers Manshud Imegenov by a well-known expert of the Buryat folklore Ts. Jamtsarano in 1906. Its published variant (Abai Geser khubun, Moscow, 1995) was consulted. The translation, commentary and articles are completed by Ye. Khundaeva.

Prior toВ the battle, on the mountain or obo the heroes ofВ the epic performed the shaman smudging asking toВ protect them and give the victory over the enemy. The petrogenetic motive, i.e. the birth ofВ the hero out ofВ stone is evidently associated with the shaman cult ofВ the personified mountain deities. The common people took the shamans toВ be very powerful and helpful toВ them. This is reflected inВ the Buryat epic.

AВ woman shaman throws the tears and snot ofВ the poor people onto the heavenly palace and the latter gets cracked and leans over on one side. Thus the heavens learned ofВ the sufferings ofВ the people on the Earth. Besides the khats, ejins, zayans inВ Cis-Baikalia there were the spirits ofВ the lower categories, i.e. the bokholdois, shudkhers and shulmuses, ada or anakhais, ukheri ezi, etc. They caused the misfortune, illnesses, even death. They called a shaman, completed smudging, put a knife under the pillow to save their children or an axe under the threshold, they had at home the sanctified mirrors, bells, polecat’s fur. The objects sanctified were called hakhyuuhan (savior) in the Buryat language.
The everyday traditions and customs
The epic shows that the traditional occupation ofВ the Buryats was hunting, then cattlebreeding. The battles with the epical personages that were quite often the embodiments ofВ the powerful natural forces, for example, Gal-Nurman who personified the prime element ofВ the Fire, played aВ big part inВ the life ofВ the Buryats.

Before the description ofВ the battle the epic-tellers gave aВ detailed account ofВ the clothes, weapon and armour ofВ the heroes. AВ good place inВ the life ofВ the people was given toВ the tournaments, for example when matchmaking. After aВ successful matchmaking they had aВ big feast, which lasted nine days, on the tenth day the guests went home.Тут будет реклама 4
When people met they had a long friendly talk so that “the foam came out on the water, the grass grew on the stone”. The epic gives a detailed description of the dwelings of the Вuryats, i.e. the straw-huts, yurts, wooden and stone houses that evidences of the evolution of the epic itself. This all is the background against which the epical scenes are laid.
